The basic principle of how orbital ball valves work

Open the process

In the closed position, the spool (yellow) is squeezed tightly against the seat (orange) under mechanical pressure on the stem (copper). When the handwheel is turned counterclockwise, the valve stem moves upwards, and its bottom angular plane deviates from the valve friction. The stem continues to lift and interact with the guide pin in the stem spiral groove, allowing the spool to begin frictionless rotation. To the fully open position, the valve stem has risen to the limit position, and the valve spool has also been turned to the fully open position.

Close the process

When closing, turn the handwheel clockwise. The stem begins to descend and allows the spool to begin to rotate. Continuing to rotate the handwheel, the stem is subjected to the interaction of the guide pin embedded in its upper screw groove, causing the stem and spool to rotate 90 degrees at the same time. When it was about to close, the spool had already rotated 90 degrees without contact with the seat. In the last few turns of the handwheel, the angular plane at the bottom of the stem mechanically wedges the ball core so that it presses tightly against the ball valve.
